Driver safety for Queensland Road Safety Week

As motorists, we must consider many factors when driving and be aware of our constantly changing environment.
In 2017, 101 motorists died and 3,528 were hurt or seriously injured in crashes on Queensland roads.
But it’s not just the driver at risk when we take a chance with safety.
In 2017, 52 passengers died and 1,210 were hurt or seriously injured in crashes on Queensland roads.
That’s why we must focus on the Fatal Five – the major factors involved in road fatalities: speeding, drink and drug driving (including medications), seatbelts, fatigue and distraction.
We need to be at our best when we’re out on the roads, for everyone’s safety.
Remember to share the road safely with other road users – follow the road rules, be patient and courteous.
Give other road users the extra space they need, especially heavy vehicles – they take longer to stop.
Tailgating increases your risk of a crash.
The speed limit is the

Road Safety Week kicks off in Coominya

Learning about RBTs early
Officers from Lowood Police Station attended Coominya State School this morning, teaching the kids about the importance of Road Safety, while having some fun.
The students and officers enjoyed chatting about what different road signage means, how it’s very important to wear helmets to protect yourself and the importance of wearing seat belts.
The students had fun learning the road rules for riding their bikes with the officers, and took home some valuable information for their parents – along with some cool key rings, torches and stickers.
When you ask your child about how their day was at the dinner table this week, make sure you ask them what they learned about road safety.
You might learn something too!
Drive to the conditions. Drive safe. Speak up for road safety.

Mind your step this Monday, Road Safety Week

Across Ipswich Police District, speed awareness and pedestrian safety is the highlight for Monday August 27 for Road Safety Week, reminding the community to walk safely when crossing roads.
Be safe crossing roads no matter where you are.
It’s easy to become complacent when you’re on a familiar route.
Stay safe and look out before you step out: think, look and listen.
Some easy safety suggestions for crossing the road and walking safely to your destination:

Unplug your earphones when crossing the street and remove your phone so your sight is directed at the road and the vehicles in your vicinity
Be aware of your surroundings and act on your instincts – don’t assume its safe to cross just because others are
Always be cautious of vehicles at intersections especially if they are turning
Be careful crossing behind vehicles, especially buses which might not have seen you
Be visible, and at night wear bright coloured or reflective clothing
Where possible,

Pedestrian safety for Queensland Road Safety Week

Pedestrians share the road with vehicles, but have no protection in an impact.
In 2017, 35 pedestrians died and 357 were hurt or seriously injured in crashes on Queensland roads.
Pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility for all road users.
Pedestrians should stop, look and listen before crossing the road.
Be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions like headphones and mobile phones.
Use designated crossings wherever possible, as this is where drivers and riders are expecting you to cross.
Be aware and cross with care.
Vehicles must be prepared to give way to pedestrians and be aware of crossings, refuges and traffic signals where pedestrians may cross.
Travel at a speed that allows you to stop safely at these when needed.
Reduce your speed at night around entertainment venues where people gather.
Observe school zone speed restrictions and travel carefully in other areas with children, such as around playgrounds.
By changing behaviours and increasing awareness, we can make Queensland roads

Speaking up for Road Safety at Fernvale, whatever the weather!

On all the days the much-needed rain could have come, it came on the Road Safety Expo at the Fernvale Country Markets held on Sunday 26 August.

Not even the weather could water down our passion for road safety this week, and members of the community still turned up to ‘Speak up for road safety’ and have their photos taken with police and the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES).

The rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the stall holders who continued to share the message that we’d gathered to keep our kids safe, focusing on child restraints and keeping children safe in and around vehicles.
Ipswich PCYC Breaking the Cycle program is moving from strength to strength, promoting further volunteer mentoring drivers to support new learner drivers into attaining the required hours to enable them to sit for their driving test.
Without our Volunteers in Policing (VIPs) the Ipswich District wouldn’t have the

Break and enter, Lowood

Lowood police are investigating a break and enters which occurred on August 22 and have released images of two men who may be able to assist in their investigations.
Just before 9pm, a silver utility attended a petrol station at Fernvale where the vehicle left before the occupants had paid for fuel.
At around 9.30pm, the same vehicle containing two men drove into the carpark of a convenience store on Main Street at Lowood.
The duo then forced entry to the locked store through the front doors before stealing a large quantity of tobacco products and several charity boxes.
The men made several trips back to their vehicle with the goods, before leaving in the utility and heading North along Main Street.
Police are seeking assistance from the public in identifying the men pictured in the CCTV images attached.
The first man is described as Caucasian, wearing a grey hoodie with a chequered flannelette style design,
